You can’t drop a real neighborhood into the middle of a major roadway and accomplish more than a roof over someone’s head. I wonder what living in that location will do for asthma rates and allergies? As for the 17 year tax abatement, the alders have driven another nail in the City’s financial coffin. All the union officials who voted for this project will likely still have union salaries or pensions in 17 years, but the people of New Haven will still be struggling to cope with the outrageous decisions they have made. As usual, cities are destroyed from within.

The actual, government regulated rents received under the low income guidelines of the specific project are used in calculating the assessed value.  Since rents for affordable housing tenants are generally lower than market rates, then 8-216a results in a lower assessment, and lower taxes.  Its the law.
