Auramine O is a uniform yellow powder that dissolves in cold water and is easily soluble in hot water, acidic water, and ethanol. It decomposes above 70°C (when heated with water) and its aqueous solution becomes colorless when concentrated sulfuric acid is added, turning pale yellow after dilution.

Basic Auramine O is primarily used in the papermaking industry, but it has many other applications, such as in cotton fibers, acrylic fibers, wool, linen, silk, bamboo weaving, and leather. It can also be processed into pigment dispersions for coloring paints, inks, coatings, rubber, and plastics. Additionally, it can be used for direct printing on denim with indigo dyeing and for discharge printing on cotton.
